A COMPARISON OF FOOD ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS IN MEXICO AND THE UNITED STATES AgEcon
Gundersen, Craig; Yanez, Mara; Valdes, Constanza; Kuhn, Betsey A..
The social safety nets in Mexico and the United States rely heavily on food assistance programs to ensure food security and access to safe and nutritious foods. To achieve these general goals, both countries' programs are exclusively paid for out of internal funds and both target low-income households and/or individuals. Despite those similarities, economic, cultural, and demographic differences between the countries lead to differences in their abilities to ensure food security and access to safe and nutritious foods. Mexico uses geographic and household targeting to distribute benefits while the United States uses only household targeting. U.S. food assistance programs tend to be countercyclical (as the economy expands, food assistance expenditures...

A Comparison of Grassland Management Systems for Beef Cattle Using Self-Contained Farmlets: Effects of Contrasting Nitrogen Inputs and Management Strategies on the Farm Economy AgEcon
Laws, J.A.; Williams, Robert J.; Pain, B.F..
The financial implications of manipulating nitrogen (N) inputs and management strategies for beef production systems were assessed. One-hectare grassland farmlets were grazed to a target sward height by beef steers; herbage surplus to grazing requirements was cut for silage. Three systems were compared: ‘CN’, conventional mineral N application to a grass monoculture and broadcast slurry; ‘TN’, tactical mineral N application at fortnightly intervals to a grass monoculture with slurry injection and the early housing of cattle; ‘GC’, a mixed grass/white clover sward with no mineral N addition and slurry injection. Comparisons were made on two contrasting soil types: a freely-draining sandy loam (site 1) and a poorly drained clay (site 2). Financial budgets...

A COMPARISON OF OPTION-THEORETIC AND CHOICE-THEORETIC APPROACHES TO EVALUATING ALTERNATIVE FINANCIAL TECHNOLOGIES FOR MORTGAGE LOANS TO LOW-INCOME HOUSEHOLDS AgEcon
Hartarska, Valentina M.; Gonzalez-Vega, Claudio.
This paper evaluates the efficacy of two alternative lending technologies - the traditional banking technology and a cash flow based counseling program - by using competing risks (option-based) and choice theoretic approaches. We find evidence to support the notion that low-income borrowers have some degree of financial sophistication, as they prepay the mortgage loan by considering the current value of the call option. The evidence also suggests that borrower heterogeneity and insolvency affect mortgage termination.

A comparison of various fitting techniques for predicting yield for the Ubolratana reservoir (Thailand) from a time series data on catch and hydrological features ArchiMer
Moreau, Jacques; Lek, Sovan; Leelaprata, Wattana; Sricharoendham, Boonsong; Villanueva, Ching-maria.
Actual catch (commercial catch and local consumption) have been made available by the Royal Thai Department of Fisheries for the Ubolratana reservoir, North East Thailand, since the impoundment of the lake in 1965. The data have been used to assess the possible relationship between the actual catch and morphometric parameters of the lake (maximum area, depth, shore line, difference between maximum and minimum area) and actual catch the year before. A comparison of the predictive power is carried out between multiple linear regression analysis, a generalised additive model, a regression tree analysis, an autoregression analysis and an artificial neural network. Results show the poorly predictive power in linear system (around 40% of explained variances),...

A Comparison of Vertical Coordination in the U.S. Poultry, Egg, and Pork Industries AgEcon
Martinez, Stephen W..
Changes in vertical coordination in the U.S. broiler, turkey, and egg industries decades ago may provide useful insight into more recent developments in the U.S. pork industry. The need to protect relationship- specific investments created incentives for contracts and vertical integration. In the presence of relationship-specific investments, market uncertainty from a number of sources helped determine the type of contract/vertical coordination alternative selected.

A COMPLETE CHARACTERIZATION OF THE LINEAR, LOG-LINEAR, AND SEMI-LOG INCOMPLETE DEMAND SYSTEM MODELS AgEcon
von Haefen, Roger H..
This study extends LaFrance’'s (1985, 1986, 1990) previous research by deriving the necessary parameter restrictions for two additional classes of incomplete demand system models to be integrable. In contrast to LaFrance'’s earlier work, this analysis considers models that treat expenditures and expenditure shares as the dependent variables in the specified incomplete demand systems. With environmental economists increasingly turning to demand system approaches to value changes in environmental quality, these new results significantly expand the menu of empirical specifications which can be used to fit a given data set. Moreover, the alternative specifications considered in this study, in combination with LaFrance'’s original work, represent a complete...

A CONTRIBUIÇÃO DO GENE HALOTANO SOBRE AS CARACTERÍSTICAS DE QUALIDADE DA CARNE SUÍNA Ciência Rural

A COST-EFFECTIVENESS ANALYSIS OF DEMAND- AND SUPPLY-SIDE EDUCATION INTERVENTIONS: THE CASE OF PROGRESA IN MEXICO AgEcon
Coady, David P.; Parker, Susan W..
This paper is concerned with the issue of the most cost-effective way of improving access to education for poor households in developing countries. We consider two alternatives: (1) extensive expansion of the school system (i.e., bringing education to the poor) and (2) subsidizing investment in education by the poor (i.e., bringing the poor to the education system). To this end, we evaluate the Programa Nacional de Educación, Salud y Alimentación (PROGRESA), a large poverty alleviation program recently introduced in Mexico that subsidizes education. Using double-difference regression estimators on data collected before and after the program for randomly selected control and treatment households, we estimate the relative impacts of the demand- and...

A CRISE DO PODER ESTATAL E A REPRODUCAO DO CAPITALISMO AgEcon
Siqueira, Euler David de.
In advanced capitalist societies, classified by Claus Offe as tardy-capitalists, one verifies a structural contradiction among the logics concerning valorization of capital and the processes of the publicadministration system. The continuous increase of work taxes in services, use values-producing work, or concrete work, usually classified as improductive work of higher value in advanced capitalist societies, according to Claus Offe, increasingly becomes a structural condition so that part of the work force may be converted into production of abstract trade/work values or into the merchandise social form. According to the Offean analysis on the growth of political-administrative systems in societies of tardy-capitalism, when organizing a portion of the...

A critique of methodologies for the comparison of organic and conventional farming systems Organic Eprints
Lee, Howard; Fowler, Susan.
This paper was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference of the Colloquium of Organic Researchers (COR). A review is presented of comparative studies of organic and conventional farming systems, with a special focus upon economic criteria. The different categories of comparison methodologies are critically reviewed. Conclusions are that classic experimentation has a valuable part to play but that more qualitative assessment can also be useful and should be encouraged. Careful allowance should be made for major background differences in management when comparing financial profitability. Longer term case studies, which try to monitor organic systems in their own right, should also be encouraged.

As profundidades do lençol...

A CULTURA NO CONTEXTO DOS ESTUDOS ORGANIZACIONAIS: Breve estado da arte AgEcon
Carrieri, Alexandre de Padua.
This present work seeks reflection on the research works about culture in organizations. As time goes by, it can be observed that in Organizational Studies, as well as in the Organizational Theory, lies a great mosaic of research works on culture, which can be verified by the amount of authors who write about the subiect. It is on this symbolic pollution and proliferation of organizational studies on culture, that several authors lay their criticism. In Brazil, works and pieces of research on culture had gained notoriety in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Fischer & Mac-Allister (2001) report that, from the studies carried out on culture in the organizations, few actually tried to take over the challenge of associating Brazilian culture to Brazilian...

A cytological study of the O5 chromosomal inversion of Drosophila subobscura (Diptera, Drosophilidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Mestres,Francesc; Figueras,Maria Teresa; Serra,Luís.
The O5 chromosomal inversion has been a cornerstone for understanding different aspects of the American colonization by Drosophila subobscura. To obtain more information of this evolutionary event it is important to know the pattern of bands of this inversion in detail. Comparing this pattern with that of D. melanogaster it is possible to predict which genes are located inside or close to the O5 inversion and use them as genetic markers. In this study, the complete band pattern of the O5 inversion is presented. Furthermore, the most important genes located inside it have been predicted. Finally, a constriction located close to the proximal breakage point of the O5 inversion has been observed many times and its possible genetic significance is discussed.

A DECISION MODEL TO ASSESS CATTLE FEEDING PRICE RISK AgEcon
May, Gary J.; Lawrence, John D..
Traditional break-even/fed cattle price projections do not provide adequate risk information to feeders, investors, lenders, and other stakeholders interested in cattle feeding decisions. The objectives of this study were two-fold: 1) develop a spreadsheet model that could estimate the net income distribution surrounding a cattle placement decision based on historical errors of futures based price forecasts, and 2) determine whether information generated from the model can be used to improve placement and marketing decisions. To accomplish objective 1, model was developed that could estimate the income distribution around a pen of cattle under a cash speculating and short hedge pricing strategy. Distribution estimates were based on 7 alternative forecast...
